European neurology is practiced in various ways in Europe. This is due to the national historic structures, the local health system and the variability of the profile of neurologists. This explains also the strong variation of manpower of neurology in different countries. Although the core content of neurology is identical, the cooperation and common fields of interests with other medical specialist fields vary. The European Medical Specialists (UEMS) website (www.uems.eu) lists a European core curriculum.
In addition to the core curriculum, also the European Board examination and other activities of the neurology section of the UEMS aim to create joint European structures. The previous EFNS and also the ENS have contributed to developments, which will be followed by the EAN.

Kurzfassung: Die Neurologie wird in Europa basierend auf historisch gewachsenen Strukturen und erforderlichen Profilen unterschiedlich praktiziert. Damit lässt sich auch die unterschiedliche Dichte von Neurologen in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern erklären. Prinzipiell ist der Inhalt der neurologischen Tätigkeitsfelder in vielen Ländern gleich, weist jedoch in der Zusammenarbeit und Abgrenzung zu anderen Fächern große Unterschiede auf. Die neurologischen Inhalte sind auf Europäischer Ebene im „Core Curriculum“ der „Union of European Medical Specialists“ (UEMS) (www.uems.eu) zusammengefasst.
Anstrengungen, europaweite gemeinsame Strukturen zu schaffen, sind neben dem „Core Curriculum“ die europäische Facharztprüfung für Neurologie sowie zahlreiche Aktivitäten der UEMS Sektion für Neurologie. Von den beiden vorausgehenden Fachgesellschaften ENS und EFNS hat sich besonders die EFNS für europäische Lösungen eingesetzt. Es ist anzunehmen, dass die EAN diese Politik fortsetzen wird.
