Sanatorium „Grafenhof” situated in a beautiful valley south of Salzburg was founded in the times of bitter poverty as one of the first „Volksheilstätten“ (public sanatorium) in Austria to cure the widespread pulmonary tuberculosis in the beginning of the 20th century. As a renowned place of therapy it also hosted the famous Austrian author Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) when he was about 17 years old, suffering from a severe tuberculosis of his lungs. Despite many grateful reports of patients, we find in his book „Die Kälte. Eine Isolation“ (1981) a scathing criticism of his stay, of the patients and the doctors and their therapy. Finally, one of his contemporaries and also his brother put the events in their true light, and Rudolf Brändle noticed: As Berhard’s fellow of the days in Grafenhof they often asked me if the events described in „Die Kälte“ were true, if the sanatorium would not have been the most deterrent, the patients the most hideous and the medical service the worst. Well, this book was not a real Bernhard without all these exaggerations.

Kurzfassung: Die Heilstätte „Grafenhof“ wurde gegründet in Zeiten der Not, war Heilort für Viele und dankbar angenommen. Umstritten war sie in der Beurteilung des Literaten Thomas Bernhard, der seine dichterische Freiheit phantasievoll auskostete. In weit günstigerem Licht steht die Heilstätte in Berichten von Zeitzeugen und Leidensgenossen. Im Gegensatz zu vielen ehemaligen Sanatorien gleicher Art besteht der „Grafenhof“ heute in zeitgemäßer Form. Tradition und Denkmalschutz werden weiterhin in Ehren gehalten.
