Allergic rhinitis is a very common disease with a propensity to develop into allergic asthma, that can have a significant effect on quality of life and productivity at work or in school. Early diagnosis of allergic rhinitis is therefore essential. Routine diagnostic procedures typically include case history documentation, skin prick testing and measurement of specific IgE antibodies. The main treatment options for allergic rhinitis are allergen avoidance, symptomatic therapy and immunotherapy. Of these, only immunotherapy is able to persistently change the course of allergic disease and prevent the development of allergic asthma.
Kurzfassung:Die allergische Rhinitis ist eine sehr häufige Erkrankung. Wegen der Gefahr des Fortschreitens zu Asthma und wegen der Auswirkung der Erkrankung auf die Lebensqualität und Leistungsfähigkeit in Beruf und Schule ist eine frühzeitige systematische Diagnosestellung essentiell, die üblicherweise aus Anamnese, Haut-Pricktest und Bestimmung des spezifischen IgEs besteht. Die Therapie baut auf den drei Säulen Allergenvermeidung – symptomatische Therapie – Immuntherapie auf. Hierbei gelingt es nur durch Immuntherapie, eine dauerhafte Änderung des Krankheitsbildes und ein Fortschreiten der Erkrankung zu Asthma in vielen Fällen zu verhindern.
