The physical and chemical processes involved in the functioning of the kidneys are reconsidered. It is shown that the transfer of fluid into the Bowman capsule of the nephrons is a gate transfer process and not a filtering process. The principle function of the kidneys is demonstrated as the control of the concentration of metabolically produced protein in blood by hydrolysis. This function is directly linked to the value of blood pressure. The origin and distribution of compounds produced in the kidneys is discussed.
