Premature ovarian failure (POF) is characterized by the combination of amenorrhea before age 40 years and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. The prevalence is approximately 1 %. Genetic causes of POF include chromosome aberrations and monogenic defects. Furthermore, polygenic-multifactorial inheritance can be assumed in a subset of cases.
