Cardiovascular Disease and Predisposing Factors in Chronic Renal Failure

The cardiovascular mortality in dialysis patients is 10 to 20 times higher than in the general population. Therefore patients with end-stage renal disease should be considered in the highest risk group for subsequent cardiovascular disease. The excess risk is caused by multiple traditional and non-traditional risk factors for ischaemic heart disease. The evaluation of the specific cardiovascular risk profile in each patient, appropriate prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease is demanded.
