External triggers including physical activity and emotional stress or rare events such as earthquakes may precipitate the onset of acute coronary syndromes. Circadian, weekly, and seasonal variations in coronary syndromes have also been observed. Furthermore, changes in the environment appear to play an important role. Triggering events probably result in the rupture of vulnerable coronary plaques via internal pathophysiological mechanisms.
