These data are from a meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies on the prevalence of hypertension around the world.1 Overall, 26% of adults have hypertension, with similar proportions for men and women.1 The prevalence of hypertension increases strongly with age, especially for women.1 Worldwide, the number of adults with hypertension is predicted to increase from 972 million in 2002 to 1,560 million in 2025, as the proportion of elderly people increases.1 Kearney PM et al.
