The malignant pleural mesothelioma is a locally progressive malignant tumor of the pleura with worldwide increasing incidence and dismal prognosis. Multimodal therapy including chemotherapy, surgery and radiation therapy is the standard of care. However, the optimal combination of these therapeutic modalities has not yet been defined properly. Since most of the present evidence comes from retrospective studies, multicentric rando mized controlled trials are urgently warranted to evalu ate thoroughly the real therapeutic benefit of each of these modalities.
Kurzfassung: Das maligne Pleuramesotheliom ist ein lokal wachsender bösartiger Tumor der Pleura mit weltweit steigender Inzidenz und schlechter Prognose. Der multimodale Therapie-Ansatz mit den Modalitäten Chemotherapie, Chirurgie und Strahlentherapie ist Gold-Standard. Die optimale Kombination dieser Modalitäten ist noch nicht ausreichend definiert. Da die etablierten therapeutischen Ansätze weitgehend auf retrospektiven Studien beruhen, sind dringend prospektive randomisierte Multicenter-Studien gefordert, um den Stellenwert dieser Therapiemodalitäten eindeutig festzulegen.
