Echocardiography is now widely applied during cardiac procedures. It is used for haemodynamic monitoring, guiding and immediate assessment of procedural results as well as detection of complications. The present review article focuses on the role of periprocedural echocardiography in the cathlab and in the operating room. Specific aspects of its role in different settings are discussed. Furthermore, a description of the value of echocardiography in newer procedures such as ASD closure, septal ablation or port access surgery is presented.
