Contemporary drug-eluting stents (DES) improv­ed in all three of their components (i.e. the metallic backbone, the polymer and the released antipro­liferative substance). Consequently, DES now provide an outstanding efficacy and safety profile, that is challenging to further advance.
To improve the prognosis of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, three main therapeutic avenues are at our disposal: Optimal secondary prevention, modern antithrombotic strategies, and intracoronary imaging guided interventions. In the light of recent data, this review offers a clinical overview of intracoronary imaging modalities, directed towards a target audience of non-invasive cardiologists.

Kurzfassung: Kontemporäre „Drug-eluting“-Stents (DES) haben sich in all ihren drei Komponenten (dem Metallgerüst, dem Polymer und der darin freigesetzten antiproliferativen Substanz) deutlich verbessert, sodass ein schwer zu überbietendes Maß an Effektivität und Sicherheit entstanden ist.
Um die Prognose von Patienten, welche einer perkutanen Koronarintervention unterzogen werden, weiter zu verbessern, haben wir drei bedeutende Eckpfeiler zur Verfügung: die Optimierung der Sekundärprophylaxe, moderne antithrombotische Strategien und die intrakoronare Bildgebung. Im Lichte aktueller Veröffentlichungen bietet dieser Review einen praxisnahen Überblick über intrakoronare Bildgebungsmodalitäten, adressiert an ein Zielpublikum von nicht-invasiven Kardiologen.
