Remnant cholesterol represents an interesting new player in the field of lipids and atherosclerosis. This article intends to define its pathophysiological role in atherosclerosis.
Moreover, its biochemical definition and quantification, as well as its present and possible future role in clinical cardiology are considered.

Kurzfassung: „Remnant“-Cholesterin ist ein interessanter neuer Risikofaktor aus dem Bereich des Fettstoffwechsels. Ziel dieses Artikels ist eine Integra­tion des Parameters in unser Verständnis über die Entwicklung der Atherosklerose. Definition, quantitative Bestimmung und pathophysiologische sowie klinische Bedeutung werden beschrieben.
Ein Ausblick auf die klinisch-praktische Umsetzung der neuen Erkenntnisse rundet den Artikel ab.
