However, competitive athletes are less likely to find their way to professional treatment. Athletic success and mental health should not be a contradiction. Specialized treatments can be offered in sports psychiatry and psychotherapy. Such treatments should be carried out in close cooperation with the existing sports and medical environment. In recent years, the field of sports psychiatry and psychotherapy has grown noticeably. In addition, professional societies have been formed in German-speaking countries: the German Society for Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (DGSPP), the Swiss Society for Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (SGSPP), and the Austrian Society for Sports Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (ÖGSPP). Internationally, the International Society for Sports Psychiatry (ISSP) should be mentioned. Goal of the societies is to promote sports psychiatry and psychotherapy across the lifespan, both in competitive sports and in the general population. This results in three areas of activity: (1) mental health and disorders in competitive sports; (2) mental health and sports-specific mental disorders in recreational sports; (3) sports and exercise as prevention and therapy for mental disorders. This is presented in the article, as well as corresponding care structures in Austria. In addition, mountain sports for the therapy of mental illness is presented. Austria seems predestined for this due to its geographical location. Psychiatric aspects of high-altitude medicine are also discussed in this context, as well as current aspects of sports psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care and research.
