ESC-Konsens zur Psychokardiologie – Psychische Gesundheit und kardiovaskuläre Erkrankungen: klinische Relevanz, Screening und integrierte Versorgung // Mental health and cardiovascular disorders – clinical relevance, screening and integrated care Journal für Kardiologie - Austrian Journal of Cardiology 2026; 33 (7-8): 147-151 Volltext (PDF) Summary Abbildungen Keywords: bio-psycho-sozial, Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankung, psychische Gesundheit, Psycho-Kardio-Team, Screening, , cardiovascular disease, CVD, mental health Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are closely linked to stress and mental health conditions. In September 2025, a consensus paper was presented at the most recent ESC, which addressed the key highlights of these connections and presents a model for appropriate and timely response. The findings of psychocardiological research are evidence-based and well-documented. Mental health conditions are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, a higher mortality from CVD is associated with a poorer prognosis. The risk of negative consequences is twice as high as in people without these conditions. The relationship is bidirectional – cardiovascular diseases place a psychosocial burden on patients and can also lead to secondary mental health conditions. The combination of biological, behavioral, and health-related factors is associated with suboptimal cardiovascular health and care. There is a significant gap in diagnosis and treatment of people with cardiovascular diseases and their risk factors, as well as in vulnerable groups like older patients and different gender. A simple, step-by-step approach is presented here. Interventions of psychosocial determinants of health are established by Psycho-Cardio Teams that make interdisciplinary collaboration easier to implement. To ensure optimal care, step-by-step screening, diagnosis, and treatment are necessary to meet the complex needs of heart patients and their caregivers.
