Objective: Primary malignant brain tumors are not reported separately from all brain malignancies by the Albanian cancer registry. We selected the county of Tirana as a catchment area and consider it a good nonrandom sampling for the whole country.
Methods: Retrospective first admissions at Tirana University Hospital “Mother Teresa” were retrieved from the electronic patients’ files, years 2005–2021. The available coding system for the period is ICD-9 three-digit code. The final diagnosis was written by hand from the attending physician and recoded as ‘Primary malignant neoplasm of brain’ (PMNB) and ‘Benign neoplasm of brain and other parts of nervous system’ (BNBOPNS).
Results: From a total of 7,345 admissions resulted a total of 5,330 first admissions. PMNB (2005–2021) first admissions were 2,664 and BNBOPNS were 2,666. Average Length of Stay (ALOS) was 13.35 days for code 191 and 11.93 for code 225. Mean age (median) at first admission for PMNB was 49.1 ± 19.1 (54.0) years, for BNBOPNS 50.2 ± 17.6 (54.0). PMNB mean annual incidence (first admissions) per 100,000 population Tirana county 2017–2021 was 7.6 (17-year incidence 6.6), and Albania 2017–2021 was 7.9 (17-year incidence 6.0). PMNB by behavior age standardized mean annual incidence (first admissions) per 100,000 population (95% CI), Tirana county, period 2017–2021, was respectively total (6.0 [4.5–7.6]), women (4.5 [2.6–6.3]) and men (7.6 [5.1–10.1]).
Conclusions: Increasing incidence of primary malignant neoplasm of brain requires special attention on the causative agencies exploration. Updating classifications and modernization of data is a must.
