Diabetes ist in den USA die häufigste Ursache von terminalem Nierenversagen [1]. Das Risiko von kardiovaskulären Ereignissen wächst bei Diabetikern mit Mikroalbuminurie (Harnausscheidung von Albumin 20–300 mg/die) um den Faktor 1,9 und bei Diabetikern mit Makroproteinurie (≥ 300 mg/die) um den Faktor 5,4 [2]. 2001 wurden in den USA für diabetische Nephropathien 16,8 Milliarden Dollar ausgegeben [3]. 1.
