Racemic beta-blockers - fixed combinations of different drugs
Propranolol - Strukturformel
Journal of Clinical and Basic Cardiology 1998; 1 (1): 15-19
Structural formula of the (R)- and (S)-enantiomers of propranolol which behave like mirror images. The asymmetric carbon atom is marked by an asterisk.

Propranolol, Propanfenon - Strukturformel
Journal of Clinical and Basic Cardiology 1998; 1 (1): 15-19
Structural similarity of (S)-propranolol and (S)-propafenone. The framed part shows the aminoalkanol chain that is common to all beta-blockers currently used in clinical practice (except sotalol). Hence, the asymmetric carbon atom (marked by an asterisk) is a common feature of all beta-adrenoceptor antagonists.

Herz - Kontraktionskraft
Journal of Clinical and Basic Cardiology 1998; 1 (1): 10-14
In human myocardium force of contraction increases with the frequency. This is, however, only true for a normal, non-failing myocardium. In heart failure the force of contraction decreases with increasing frequency of contraction. Thus, a high heart rate may lead to deterioration of the patient.

Pharmacological properties of beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs
Betablocker - Metabolismus
Journal of Clinical and Basic Cardiology 1998; 1 (1): 5-9
Metabolic pathways of ß-adrenoceptor blocking drugs in the liver. Glu = Glucuronide. The numbers indicate the following metabolic pathways: 1) Glucuronidation of the drug at the OH group of the side chain. 2) Aromatic hydroxylation and subsequent glucuronidation partly combined with the steps described under 3 and 4 (---). 3) Oxidative desamination. 4) Ether cleavage to phenol. 5) N-desalcylation.
